A brief background of the character:
Maya is a 'spirit medium'- which basically means she can channel spirits. She doesn't have as much 'power' as her cousin, Pearl, but that doesn't mean she isn't capable! However, after a mishap involving being accused of murder during a channeling at the Kurain village, where her family has lived, chances are she's not too hip to jump back on the bandwagon just yet.
Maya is spunky and spastic, but sweet. She's also quite the fangirl and gets excited when she sees something pertaining to her obsessions.
Her best friends are Phoenix Wright, the [in his words] semi-famous attorney, and Pearl Fey, her 8 year old cousin, mentioned above as a powerful spirit channeler, even at her young age.
Maya works as Phoenix's assistant at Wright and Co., the law office that Phoenix heads. She goes with him to court "battles" and to investigate crimes for evidence to prove their clients innocent. Maya helps Phoenix gather the facts and eggs him on in the courtroom.
Maya's sister, Mia, was Phoenix's chief until her unexpected death- in which Maya was the prime suspect. That was how Phoenix and Maya met, and though it wasn't the greatest time for Maya, the two became friends eventually, and the moment could probably be identified as the moment when Phoenix agreed to defend her in court. At least, that's when Maya latched onto him.
It wasn't until Pearl channeled Mia during Maya's second murder trial in which she was the defendant that Maya saw Mia again, and it was the best present Pearl could have given her- however, Pearl had channeled Mia before, and only Phoenix had seen her. In fact, the channeled Mia assisted Phoenix with both of Maya's trials because Maya could not herself! [The channeled Mia, of course.]
All in all, even though Maya's had a crazy life, she's still as peppy as she could be.
